What Vistas del Conde offers

Explore our History

Casa Vistas del Conde is a family project that started in November 2011 when we bought one of the most ancient houses in the Tirol area. The property was abandoned for a long time, that is why the house was totally dismantled before being rescued by us. By that time, it was just a dream, then it was made reality with the rebuilding of what would be Vistas del Conde (name given to our house). For 5 years, we worked in the improvements. It first belonged to an engineer of the Panama Canal, bearer of the Hughes surname, with U.S. citizenship, and it seems he himself designed it. After dying in the U.S., he inherited it to his son who came to Costa Rica and was distinguished for being a high cuisine chef, and he turned the house into a restaurant that worked for several years. It was first named Los Cipreses and then Blue Fountain. The name Vistas del Conde was born thanks to the original owner of the lands where today our country house is; it was Count Franz von Tattenbach, who came as an ambassador and played an important role in the reconciliation between Germany and Costa Rica, after our country declared war on the Second World War. Count Tattenbach felt in love not only of this area, but also of a beautiful young lady named Luisita Yglesias, daughter of former president Rafael Yglesias and then known as the Countess. In honor of her, a famous and antique hotel near our house had that name. The Countess and Count usually came in a horse to the place that is today Vistas del Conde to enjoy a majestic view to the Central Valley. Another contribution of the Conde was the current Tirol area that is known for the large number of cypress trees that were planted by order of Franz von Tattenbach during the glorious times where Los Ángeles de San Rafael de Heredia was land of Condes.

Volcan Barva | Offered by Canopy Adventure

Measuring approximately 62 square miles (160 square kms), the massive Barva Volcano sits at the edge of Costa Rica’s Central Valley. Scientists believe that the dormant volcano was last active 3,000 to 5,000 years ago.It forms “Braulio Carrillo” National Park’s highest point, approximately 9,700 feet (2,950 mts) above sea level. Several cold-water, rain-fed lagoons dot the volcano’s surface, remnants of the once-bubbling and lava-filled craters. The Park’s largest and most visited lagoon, aptly named “Barva Lagoon”, is the volcano’s now-dormant main crater. The lagoon measures 230 feet in diameter and plunges 28 feet deep, its water averaging a temperature of 52° F. Copey Lagoon, located less than two miles from Barva Lagoon, is the only other lagoon open to the public. There are four major hiking trails that snake through this National Park: Sendero “Cacho de Venado” (“Stag Horn” Path), Barva Lagoon Path, Copey Lagoon Trail and Vara Blanca Lookout Path. All of them covered by a primary Cloud Forest. visit Canopy Adventure site

Cannopy Tour in the cloud forest

The trip begins with an early pick up 8 am aprox. at Vistas del Conde (one hour before tour schedule). From here you will be transported to the Operation Center in San Jose de la Montana, Heredia. After registering and using the restrooms, the guides will be gearing you up for the adventure with a professional climbing harness, pulley, leather gloves and helmet. Once the gear is in place they will jump back in their transportation to do a short (1/2 mile) drive up the hill. During this last drive you will be able to learn about the cypress plantation and the way that it is managed. Once you get to the top of the hill the guides will be conducting a “safety talk” where all the doubts about how to properly use the gear, the right position to ride on the cables and the way the break system works will be explained. On this adventure all you have to do is enjoy the ride. After the safety talk you will be walking into the primary forest. As you make your way to the first platform you will stop along the way to learn more about the cloud forest. At the end of this nature hike you will find yourselves at the foot of a staircase that will take you to the top of the forest, climbing along a gigantic oak tree. Once you get to the first platform you will start using gravity to travel. visit Canopy Adventure site
